The name Canavan in Ireland is derived from the native Gaelic Ó'Ceanndubháin Sept who were hereditary physicians to the
Ó'Flahertys of Connemara in the West of the country. Whitehead and Whitelock are sometimes used as variant translations of
this name that is still often found in Galway.
